What is coworking?

Le coworking est une nouvelle façon de travailler apparue au cours du XXIe siècle. Il s’agit d’un endroit équipé permettant de réunir des travailleurs d’horizons divers dans le but de mutualiser les coûts et de partager les expériences.

Coworking has grown significantly in recent years. The phenomenon is due both to technological advances, to the wave of self-entrepreneurship, to concerns about the economy and to ecological awareness.

Definition of coworking

Nous sommes la génération co : nous vivons en colocation, nous nous déplaçons en covoiturage et nous travaillons en coworking. Le préfixe co (du latin cum, qui signifie “avec”) s’emploie pour indiquer la notion de partage, d’association, de participation. Le terme “working” doit quant à lui être perçu comme “espace de travail”. Le coworking signifie donc le partage d’un espace de travail.

Coworking therefore does not necessarily mean that we work together on the same project or for the same company. On the contrary, the idea is to bring together in the same space people who each work for their own account, their own clients or their own employer. Coworking makes it possible to pool resources and premises.

Le coworking se pratique essentiellement dans des bureaux, souvent en open space, avec certaines pièces isolées selon les besoins (réunions, communications téléphoniques, besoin d’un niveau de concentration élevé…). Il se pratique aussi dans des lieux comme des cafés ou restaurant réaménagés qui mettent à disposition leur connexion Wi-Fi en échange d’une petite consommation. Récemment, la notion de coworking a été étendue à celle du coliving, où l’espace de travail est aussi un lieu de vie, tel que proposé par les résidences Cowool.

What are the benefits of coworking?

Adopting coworking means saving money, preserving the environment somewhat, avoiding too much loneliness at work, meeting people and building a professional network.

Le coworking représente en premier lieu des économies grâce à la mutualisation des locaux et des moyens. L’espace de coworking propose en effet a minima une (bonne) connexion internet, des imprimantes partagées et du matériel de bureau. S’il est généralement disposé en open space, il offre aussi des bureaux individualisés, des salles de réunions équipées de projecteur. Il peut également proposer des ordinateurs et des moyens téléphoniques.

The geographical location of the coworking space can also allow some employees to avoid traveling too long between home and work. This avoids the use of the car, which represents an interest that is as economical as it is ecological.

Coworking allows workers from different backgrounds to meet. There are indeed auto-entrepreneurs, nomadic workers, consultants from different fields who come to develop their projects while exchanging with others. Fruitful collaborations are thus born: the webmaster meets the designer he was looking for, the project leader flushes out his salesperson, the employee sees the development of other career opportunities...

Coworking is very flexible. You can rent a workspace by the hour, day or month. You can also book a room for a meeting. A particular effort is focused on the working environment. This should be warm. We let daylight in. It is not uncommon to find a sofa or a beverage dispenser, or even a space for lunch. Animations are also created to promote exchanges.

From coworking to coliving

The concept of coworking has recently extended to that of coliving. The latter offers not only to share a workspace, but also a place of residence, more or less temporary.
